For better or worse, film has changed drastically since my last post to this blog. Star Wars  stopped being fun, the horror genre continued being amazing, The Joker  made me cry (a lot), Marvel kept making me shrug and say "it was alright, I guess," the Suspiria  remake let me feel smart as I explained what was happening to my poor confused family, and audiences read the disturbing accounts of Harvey Weinstein's sexual abuse over the past several decades. Everyone was shocked until they stopped being shocked, and eventually Weinstein was allowed to return to doing whatever it is rich men who get away with sexually abusing women do in their free time. Bumping into an ex is always uncomfortable, and writing this post feels strikingly similar. So, this is me avoiding eye contact and awkwardly shifting my weight from one foot to the other as I mumble my excuses. As we make our way into the new year and 2016's teaser trailers for the releases of 2017 come closer to being actual films, it's time to start preparing for the big releases of this year. Here are the films which, based on their trailers, I am personally excited to see this year, in order from least to greatest. Hopefully these films prove to be as phenomenal as their trailers promise, and aren't just the product of some clever editing and captivating music. Also, please note that there are plenty of other films I am looking forward to, these are just the ones which I'll definitely be viewing on their opening release date. Alien: Covenant The grotesque yet beautiful art of H.R. Giger has endlessly fascinated me; it's a sort of repulsive combination of science fiction with twisted horror elements, a melding of man and machine, and Alien: Covenant  seems to visually carry on this spirit as another predecessor of the original (and phenomenal) Alien  film....

Rogue One (2016) In previous releases in the Star Wars  franchise the audience has been subjected to witnessing the drama unfold within the Skywalker family, which was an entertaining (phenomenally so) experience, but felt distant and turned the audience into a sort of third party. Rogue One , however, transforms the audience into a part of the film through its fantastic and sometimes horrifying or grotesque cinematography. Rather than being given passing shots of city streets and the aliens which occupy the Star Wars universe, the camera weaves through crowded streets as though the audience is stumbling past these creatures first-hand when it isn't panning upwards to reveal intimidating shots of the massive spaceships soaring up above. This intimacy within Rogue One's  cinematography is closely tied to its plot as well, which focuses on the common people rather than the Skywalker family as previous releases did.
