For better or worse, film has changed drastically since my last post to this blog. Star Wars  stopped being fun, the horror genre continued being amazing, The Joker  made me cry (a lot), Marvel kept making me shrug and say "it was alright, I guess," the Suspiria  remake let me feel smart as I explained what was happening to my poor confused family, and audiences read the disturbing accounts of Harvey Weinstein's sexual abuse over the past several decades. Everyone was shocked until they stopped being shocked, and eventually Weinstein was allowed to return to doing whatever it is rich men who get away with sexually abusing women do in their free time. Bumping into an ex is always uncomfortable, and writing this post feels strikingly similar. So, this is me avoiding eye contact and awkwardly shifting my weight from one foot to the other as I mumble my excuses. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) The action genre is perhaps the most popular genre of film. The addition of CGI to modern cinema brought along endless possibilities for fantastic stories, it brought unimaginable levels of creative freedom and provided directors and screenwriters the ability to take characters to far off lands and into other universes to face off against horrifying monsters beyond our wildest dreams. Unfortunately, none of this is what filmmakers have been giving us for the past several years. Instead, we have received an endless supply of remakes. Sit back and think of the last action movie you saw which wasn't based on something else. The last action movie which wasn't inspired by a novel, a reinterpretation of an older movie, based off of a toy, or some bizarre sequel which also serves as a prequel to a film which has long since been forgotten. Benedict Cumberbatch in Doctor Strange I would like to begin this review with taking a brief moment to note that I am not a comic book fan. Despite having seen every Marvel movie and eagerly awaiting the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy I have never read a comic book from Marvel, so I went into this movie while being blissfully unaware of its accuracy or respect to the source material. That being said, Doctor Strange  is the most visually stunning movie I've seen this year. Admittedly, its plot is lackluster, every element of its story seemed remarkably similar to various plot-lines in the rest of the Marvel franchise, and there were moments where the soundtrack felt like little more than stock action movie soundtrack which was provided to add to the noise during fight scenes.
